The first children’s book series to address

the special needs of young children

being raised by their grandparents:

The Adventures of NanaCat and Her Children

Written by Maureen Catherine and artfully illustrated by Kara Richardson, The Adventures of NanaCat and Her Children series is created to help children ages 3 – 8 adapt to living with and being raised by a relative caregiver.

“There are 371,000 Florida children, 6 million nationwide, living with a caregiver who is a relative but not a biological parent,” according to Brent Elrod, Statewide Coordinator for the Florida Kinship Center at the USF School of Social Work. “These children and their new caregivers face unique challenges, and the NanaCat series helps address these issues.”

The series speaks to the need for security that is often present when a child is taken from their parents and introduced to a new home.  Donna Butts, Executive Director of Generations United asserts, “The Nana Cat Series is a pioneer in the field of children's literature, expanding the definition of family and portraying the invaluable role relatives play in keeping families together.  This clever portrayal of grandparent headed families is easy for all children to relate to, feel comforted by, and embrace.”

Book Two, “Someone New” is now available.  Please contact the Florida Kinship Center at kinfo@flkin.org for more information.
